GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® at a Glance
If you are encountering GYROTONIC® or GYROKINESIS® for the first time, the initial question is usually the same: What exactly are they? Here you will find a clear overview of the fundamental principles, the differences, and the defining characteristics of both methods.
GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® – two methods, one system
Both methods share the same movement principles – they differ in how and where the training takes place. GYROTONIC® utilizes specially designed equipment, while GYROKINESIS® is performed without equipment, using a stool and a mat.
Was ist das GYROTONIC® System?
GYROTONIC® is a movement system practiced using specially designed movement-guiding equipment. Developed by Juliu Horvath, it combines elements of movement theory, yoga, dance, and Tai Chi – resulting in fluid, three-dimensional movement sequences that engage the entire body as a unified whole.
The focus is not on training individual muscles, but on the interplay of entire movement sequences – flexibility, body tension, coordination, and a more precise awareness of movement. The exercises are accompanied by breathing patterns that support the flow of movement and give the method its own rhythm.
Training takes place using specially designed movement-guiding equipment. These devices guide the movement, support the flow of motion, and enable precise, guided work – making them particularly suitable for anyone who prefers a clear structural framework.
What is the GYROKINESIS® Method?
GYROKINESIS® is the version without equipment – and is considered the origin of the GYROTONIC® method.
GYROKINESIS® works just as well as a standalone format as it does as a complement to equipment-based training. Depending on the goal and approach, the practice can be structured to be more active and dynamic, or calmer and more focused on body awareness.
Training takes place using a stool and a mat, involving fluid movement sequences that maintain the same clear connection between breathing and movement. The format is more flexible and location-independent – suitable as an introduction, a standalone workout, or a supplement to equipment-based training.
What makes GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® special
Both methods share a common foundation – but what truly sets them apart from other movement approaches? Three principles that define the system.
Three-dimensional instead of linear
Decompression of movement
Movement as a whole
